(The Four-Move Structure)

(Worked Examples)

Acknowledge】 "Of course! I’m really sorry to hear that you had to miss last week’s lecture — it covered quite a lot of key points.

Respond】 I’m definitely happy to share my notes with you, though I should mention that they are pretty brief and mostly shorthand, because the professor spoke quite quickly.

Reason】 They might not make complete sense on their own, so it would probably be much more helpful if you checked them alongside the lecture slides on the course portal.

Next Step】 I’ll take a quick photo of my notebook and send it to you this evening. If there’s any handwriting you can’t read, just drop me a message and I’ll explain it!"

Acknowledge】 "Hello Professor, thank you very much for taking the time to see me today. I wanted to talk to you about the final assignment that is due tomorrow.

Respond】 Unfortunately, I have been quite unwell with a severe fever for the past few days, and I haven’t been able to complete the draft. I was wondering if it might be possible to grant a short extension.

Reason】 I’ve already finished all the required literature reading and drafted the first two sections, so I’ve made solid progress. I just lost several crucial working days due to illness, and I have a doctor’s certificate if needed.

Next Step】 If I could possibly have until this Friday afternoon, I’m confident I can submit a high-quality paper. I really appreciate your understanding."

(Hedging)

perhaps · possibly · it might be · a little bit · quite · probably

Let me know if that works for you · Shall I follow up with you later? · Does that sound reasonable?

语气软化词 (Hedging) 是得体口语的精髓 对比:“You must extend my deadline”(极其生硬无礼,严重扣除情境得体分)与 “I was wondering whether it might be possible to have a short extension”(得体、尊重、恰当)。
